Add color, texture & definition to your home’s landscape
Mulch is a simple and inexpensive way to enhance the appearance of your property while benefiting your shrubs, trees, and flowers. Here in Richmond, both homeowners and landscape contractors count on Pete Rose, Inc. for top-quality mulch. Homeowners love our rich colors, and trust our mulches to be clean and safe. Landscape contractors count on our superior quality. Everyone loves that our mulch costs less than the bags at the big box stores.
Pete Rose, Inc. offers both pine mulch as well as color-enhanced hardwood mulch. All of the mulch we sell is double-shredded; its finer texture results in a neater, cleaner appearance. Our mulch is also biodegradable – and not treated with chemicals – making it safe for your family and pets. Choosing the right mulch for you will depend on the needs of your plants and your personal aesthetic tastes.
We carry hardwood mulch in three rich colors: black, brown, and red. Our mulches last twice as long as standard hardwood mulch; along with bark, our version includes the pulp and roots of the tree. Our mulches will decompose and enrich the soil like the others, but at a slower rate since it’s a more substantial product. And because our dyes are eco-friendly, they’re perfectly safe for children, pets, and plants.
Created from the bark of pine trees, pine mulch can be used in much the same way as hardwood mulch. As pine mulch is more acidic than hardwood mulches, it’s a great choice for pairing with acid‐loving plants such as azaleas and rhododendrons.
The Benefits of Mulch
An application of mulch provides a polished, finished appearance and a distinctive contrast to the green areas of your yard; it also helps delineate flower beds, shrubs, and trees. And that’s just the start of what mulch can do. Here are some additional benefits of mulch:
- Protects against erosion
- Conserves moisture
- Protects roots from temperature extremes
- Inhibits weed growth
- Nourishes & enriches soil as it decomposes

How Much Will You Need?
If you’re refreshing the mulch in a planting bed, we recommend adding a two-inch layer. Covering a new planting bed? We recommend a four-inch layer of mulch. One cubic yard of mulch will cover 165 sq. feet to a depth of two inches; it will cover just over 82 sq. feet to a depth of four inches.
